Homestays Grenada
We can give you the opportunity to meet local people by staying as guests within their homes, or renting an apartment or house in areas that are 'off the beaten track'. You have a choice of a wide range of accommodations, from a simple wooden house with basic amenities to a very comfortable residence.
The houses are situated in many different areas of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, near the town, beach or countryside. You can take a room in a house, or an apartment downstairs from your hosts, or whole house.
You will see areas of Grenada that other visitors would normally miss, and get a real insight into the culture and lifestyle. The local diet is generally a healthy one, containing a variety of tasty fruit and vegetables. Local preparations are typically hot and spicy. Chicken and fish are popular, as are ground provisions like yams and sweet potatoes. Some homes can cater for special diets, like vegetarians.
Children are welcome in the majority of homes, and we try to match visitors' children with hosts' children in terms of age. We also like to know your interests to try to match you with the most compatible host family. It is also great for single travelers, as it is a safe avenue through which to meet people and make friends, and to have a fun and fulfilling experience.
You might spend time on a nutmeg plantation with a farmer, go boating, or visit a local school. You will meet other family and community members and be involved in village activities, like a cricket match or making carnival costumes. There is also plenty to explore alone, like the rainforest and the waterfalls.
The mixture of African, East Indian, Amerindian, French and British influences has left an interesting cultural blend reflected in the folklore, dialect, music and general way of life. Calypso and reggae music are popular, and there are festivals throughout the year. You may catch a reggae or calypso show with your hosts, or a live theater show.
Carriacou and Petite Martinique are particularly scenic and quiet, and they both share the famous 'Big Drum' tradition, the folk dancing and drumming that accompanies special events like boat launching and tombstone feasts.
With Homestays Grenada you can expect wonderful hospitality at affordable rates, which start at US$30 plus 5% tax per night and range through US$40-120 a night for an apartment/house. Some hosts offer all meals, drinks and airport transfers as part of your package.
