HUNGERFORD is a small historic town set in the midst of the NORTH WESSEX DOWNS AREA OF OUTSTANDING NATURAL BEAUTY, on the fringe of Berkshire, bordering Wiltshire to the West, Hampshire to the South and Oxfordshire to the North. North Wessex Downs AONB is recognised. as one of England's finest landscapes. It is a busy traditional market town renowned for its antique shops and there is the popular Street Market on Wednesdays.

About three miles from the M4 motorway and one hour from Heathrow, Hungerford is ideal for access to Bath and the West Country, Stonehenge, Avebury and Salisbury and Winchester, Oxford and the Cotswolds. Also well situated for business in the Thames Valley, in Newbury and in Swindon.

The KENNET and AVON CANAL passes through Hungerford and visitors can enjoy a trip along the canal aboard the motorised traditionally painted 'Rose of Hungerford' moored in the Wharf or on the horse drawn barge.

WALKING: There are many excellent local walks including an area of 'special scientific interest' which is renowned for its bird and plant life. Being avid ramblers we can offer many suggestions for exploring West Berkshire and the neighbouring Wiltshire Downs and we possess an extensive collection of the latest Ordnance Survey Maps. In addition we would be pleased to offer guided walks, provide transport to/from a chosen walk alternatively arrange a 'meet and greet' from the train/bus station. Non members are always welcome to join the West Berks Ramblers on any walk featured in their programme

CYCLING - The Severn and Thames Route (Gloucester - Newbury) - THE NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK ROUTE NN4A - passes through Hungerford and we are pleased to offer a friendly welcome to cyclists arriving in all weathers. Emergency repairs can be undertaken by your host

FISHING - Fly Fishing and Coarse Fishing on the Kennet - we are very happy to make arrangements whether for trout - when in season - or coarse fishing.

HORSE RACING WORLD - Newbury racecourse is 10 miles to the East and Lambourn, the second most important centre for the racehorse industry in the U.K. is only 5 miles away.

OTHER LOCAL ATTRACTIONS include the Crofton Pumping Station, which houses two beam engines dating from 1812 and 1845, the former being the oldest working steam driven beam engine in the world. Wilton Windmill, which is still using wind power to turn the grindstone, the ruins of Donnington Castle and the famous Combe Gibbet.

HOW TO FIND US

Exit Junction 14 M4 motorway, follow A338.
At Junction with A4 turn right, left to town centre at Bear Hotel, over the canal, under railway bridge, continue driving through the town and take a right turn at a miniature roundabout into Atherton Road (signposted British Legion) - at top of this road turn left at 'T' Junction, follow this road for abt 35 mtrs, turn right into Homefield Way, third left into Bourne Vale.
