Stoneleigh House

Built of local stone, Stoneleigh House has many interesting features, including flagstone floors, old beams and wood panelling. The house has a southerly aspect which makes the rooms bright and full of light whenever the sun is shining.

We have a large typical cottage garden, full of colour during the summer months.

The village has an excellent pub, The Westbury, within a few minutes walk of us, which has a wide-ranging menu. There is also a lively village shop/post office and lovely church.

One of the most unusual features of the house is that it has a double roof - thatch with slates put on at a later date, probably about 150 years ago when the Wells to Cheddar railway line was built, which enabled slate to be transported from South Wales.

Outside is the old farm yard and buildings, with a Victorian blacksmith's forge and a very large cider press. We don't make cider any more but the local brew can be obtained locally.

Rooms are attractively furnished with country antiques and wonderful views across unspoilt countryside. There is a guests lounge on the first floor, and every bedroom has a hospitality tray.

Prices include a five course breakfast, with a full English for those with large appetites, using local produce, free range eggs and home made preserves.

* Double en suite with power shower.
* Twin/double en suite with bath and shower attachment.
* Double with private bathroom with bath and shower attachment.

The many places of interest to visit locally include the magnificent Wells Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace, surrounded by a moat with swans that ring a bell at feeding time.

Also worth a visit are Glastonbury Tor and Abbey and the many National Trust properties in Somerset.

The famous show caves at Wookey Hole and Cheddar, with its spectacular gorge, are only four miles away.

For walkers and naturalists the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels are on our doorstep.

Angling and sailing are catered for at Chew Valley Lake in the heart of the Mendips. Clark's Village at Street, and Bristol's Cribbs Causeway have become major regional shopping centres.

Bath offers more specialist shopping, as well its famous Georgian architecture, Abbey and Roman Baths.

Bristol Airport and the Bath and West Agricultural Showground are only twenty minutes away.
