The Carpenters Arms, Lacock

The oldest portion of the building was built in the 1300's (which is now our beer cellar), this was acquired in 1610 when the rest of the main building was erected. In 1610 this establishment was called The White Hart, which took its name from the badge of King Richard II. In the early 1700's we had a name change to the current one, The Carpenters Arms. The most probable reason for this is, because around that time Lacock had become a boom town (trading in leather and wool), which brought in a lot of carpenters, coopers and woodmen. The reason for the name change was to attract those ever growing numbers of workers in the town. In 1724 there was an extension built on the top of the building, to house the brewery (unfortunately not a lot remains today, about half). The building of the brewery was probably done to keep up with the increasing demand for ale.

The Carpenters Arms has been used in a number of films over the years. The first was back in the 1939, with the making of Jamaica Inn. In the years to follow the Carpenters Arms was used in the following films and period dramas - Woman in Black (which some of the local residents were cast) , Emma, Moll Flanders, The Dinosaur Hunter , Randall & Hopkirk Deceased and the Mayor of Casterbridge Emma to name but a few. And just recently we were used for the filming of the advert for the 2005 cricket Test Match .

At the Carpenters Arms can seat 50 people very comfortably in our bar & lounge (with the ability to seat up to 100), all of which are non-smoking. We produce the finest quality meals for you and your guests. We use only local suppliers for our produce, to ensure that only the highest quality ingredients are being used in the creation of your meal. Seasonal vegeatables are organically grown on our own allotments. Your meal is homemade on these premises and cooked to order (ensuring the freshest, highest quality meal).

A quick note about the B&B rooms, since we began offering B&B (15 years ago) we have made sure the rooms have been smoke free.
