Angles-sur-l'Anglin authentic medieval village is classed 'one of the most beautiful villages of France' and renowned for the exceptional abundance of flowers (class 3 in the official 'Villages Fleuris').

You will discover his medieval houses, which testify of his rich historic past. No matter what your taste you will find something of interest amongst the many natural features such as grottes, unusual sites, rock formations used by climbers, and much more which will delight your journey of discovery of Angles itself, the valley and the river Angles.

Visitors will touch the rich history of the past as they come upon evocative name such as 'La Tranchée des Anglais' (the English Trench), la Huche Corne, and la maison du cardinal la balue (cardinal La balue's native house) Visit St. Paul's chapel built on the same rocky promontory as the original castle, founded in the 10th c.

This chapel, which houses many exhibitions, is contemporary with the later 11th and 12th C. castle. The whole area attracts photographers and nature lovers. From the viewing point of the Huche Corne a panorama of the lower town and the river Anglin opens before you. The splendid castle, constructed from the 11th to the 15th century belonged to the Lusignan family then to the bishop of Poitiers after the 100 years' war. It is open from July to August.

The castle is perched 50 meters above the lower town and the Anglin valley. From here you can see 'la Chapelle Ste. Croix, the remains of the 11th century monastery and the lower town cemetery with it's 14th century 'Hosanière cross'.
You will discover relaxing walks along the wooded river bank of the Anglin river or the more active can walk up to the cliff tops which provide superb view points, or take a longer walk part of the national GR marked walk. The river Anglin is classed as category 2 and fishermen will appreciate the abundance of fish.

This well known sites for caving, potholing and rock climbing attract many enthusiasts. Its neighbourhood reserve you of pleasant surprises and beautiful meetings. So will cross yourselves frequently strollers, riders and cyclists, kayakers, speleologists and followers of the climbing, naturalists, fishermen, amateur or professional painters, all worried of protecting their mutual harmony and all concern to accommodate each other and respect this protected environment.
