Strawberry Cottage
Situated just five minutes from central Blenheim in Marlborough New Zealand, Strawberry Cottage is across the road from Montana's Brancott Estate vineyard one of Blenheim's most popular wedding and conference venues. It is also easy walking distance to Mt Riley winery and the Cob Cottage.
During your stay, take a dip in the pool, a ride on Timmy the family pony, or enjoy some quiet contemplation or fishing on the Opawa River, which meanders through our property. Taste some of the olive oil pressed from our olive grove.
We are 30 minutes' drive from the Picton ferry terminal where ferries operate to and from Wellington in the North Island.
The glorious Marlborough Sounds and Queen Charlotte walking track are also within an easy half-hour drive from Strawberry Cottage.
There are seven golf courses within 20 km of Strawberry Cottage.
The Nelson Lakes and Rainbow skifield are an hour and a half's drive from us.
Whale watching at Kaikoura is an hour and a half away.
A port-a-cot and high chair are available if you are travelling with little ones, and we can usually arrange a babysitter if you fancy a night out in one of Marlborough's fine restaurants. We are happy to help with recommendations, bookings, and even pickups and drop-offs where possible.
The cottage is fully self-contained, and we provide a light and tasty continental breakfast or bacon and free range eggs for a hearty cooked breakfast.
Originally from England, your host Heidi has travelled extensively in Europe, Australia and the Middle East. She met Ian (whose travels have focused mainly on Asia) when he was running a sheep station near Fairlie in the McKenzie country.
They moved north to Marlborough and started planting Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes six years ago. They built Strawberry Cottage from hay bales they grew themselves and lived in it while they built their award-winning house.
They built Strawberry Cottage using straw bales, from straw grown on our own farm. The bales were stacked to make the walls and then plastered, providing extra-thick, extra insulated walls.
Open the honesty box in Strawberry Cottage's back porch and you can still see the straw and chicken wire that lie within the smooth white plaster.
