Smallwood House Hotel is a family run bed & breakfast, offering quality 4 star accommodation and award winning Cumbrian breakfasts in Ambleside in the heart of the English Lake District.

Being slightly larger than your average Cumbrian B&B, our guest house provides the perfect place to enjoy short breaks or longer holidays in one of our 12 comfortable, individually furnished bedrooms.

The winter months are really lovely in the Lake District, and our spectacular scenery looks even better bathed in sunlight on a clear, crisp day. From our hotel doorstep in Ambleside, experienced walkers can climb the high Lakeland fells, but there are plenty of low level walks for a range of abilities, as well as cycle routes and viewpoints to entice you into the great outdoors.

Ambleside is the perfect choice for exploring the Lake District and Cumbria. Leave the car behind and take a bus trip to some of our lovely nearby towns and villages, such as Grasmere, Hawkshead & Keswick.

If the weather is less than kind during your visit, there are plenty of indoor visitor attractions nearby, including the homes of famous Lakeland literary figures like William Wordsworth or Beatrix Potter. From the pier at Waterhead in Ambleside you can take a boat trip or cruise on Windermere to Bowness or Lakeside at the opposite end of the Lake. Windermere Lake Cruises sail all year and their boats offer you lots of protection from the elements.

Remember, our B&B guests also have use of the luxury spa and swimming pool at a hotel just a few minutes walk away - a great way to spend a winter afternoon.

We are in the centre of Ambleside, a bustling and vibrant small market town offering a good selection of specialist shops and great quality restaurants, bars and cafes. The town is great for shopping, with lots of independent shops that are a bit different to the norm, and some recognised brand names you'll know and love. Smallwood House Hotel has a private car park and offers complimentary WiFi access for our B&B guests.

Anthony & Christine have been welcoming new guests and old friends to Smallwood House for 22 years. Our fine Victorian town house offers 12 comfortable, individually furnished bedrooms and we have been awarded 4 stars by our Visit England inspector. We have also gained a Breakfast award thanks to the quality and content of our breakfasts, see the food page for more information.

The Lounge

Our warm, comfortable guest lounge provides the perfect place to relax after a day of activities, or to gather before an evening out in Ambleside. We love to hear the laughter as guests can often be found playing games, chatting or reading from our selection of local books. The open fire is lit throughout the winter, and occasionally when needed in the Summer!

Special occasions

If you're celebrating or if you'd just like to treat that someone special then we'll be happy to arrange flowers and champagne for your arrival. Please let us know if you have any other special requests and we'll do our best to help.

Leisure facilities

We have arranged for our guests to use the leisure facilities at the Salutation Hotel and Spa which is just a 2 minutes walk away. The Salutation Spa offers a beautiful 12m long swimming pool, sauna, steam room and indoor and outdoor hot tubs. For the more active among you, their gym equipment is state-of-the-art with built in televisions and iPod docking stations. We have 4 passes available at any one time for Smallwood House guests.

The Great Outdoors

Everyone at Smallwood House shares a passion for both the hotel and our surrounding area. We've done most of the local walks ourselves (high and low level) and we're always delighted to share our knowledge. Ambleside is a fantastic location to explore the wider Lake District and whether you're travelling on foot, by bike,car,bus or even boat we'll gladly help you arrange your activities.

We have a private car park behind the hotel, which is used exclusively for our guests.

We offer complimentary wifi access throughout the hotel for our guests.

Nurture Lakeland

We are members of the visitor payback scheme run through Nurture Lakeland. Nurture Lakeland is a registered charity which helps tourism buisnesses and individuals donate to conservation projects which will ensure that the Lake District remains a beautiful place to visit. We ask all our guests to pay £1 supplement on their bill which goes direct to funding such projects. If you's rather not take part, then we'll happily remove this cost, however.

Evening meals
All our meals are homemade and freshly prepared. Evening meals are served on one week of each month - between March & October.

Packed lunches
We can make up packed lunches for your day out, with our homemade gingerbread, sandwiches of your choice, a selection of fruit & biscuit and fill your flask .

The Lounge
In the lounge, guests can play games, chat together, read from our selection of local books or simply relax. The open fire (especially during the festive season) is an addition no one can avoid. We love to hear the laughter from a group of friends gathering in the evening before going out.

Pets
Pets are welcome, and many return with their owners year after year.
