Grassington has so much to offer throughout the year and is particularly wonderful during December when you are transported back to Dickensian times with the Grassington Dickensian Festival with street entertainment including the famous Penny Plane Theatre Group, a Grassington based intrepid group of thespians who perform in the style of a Victorian travelling theatre. There's also the Christmas market, with the many varied stalls and array of locally crafted goods on offer, it is an ideal opportunity to do a bit of Christmas shopping during your visit. There are also many stalls offering Christmas fayre with hog roasts, mince pies, mulled wine, spicy soups etc., and of course there's always a choice of award winning meals available in the local pubs and restaurants. It really is an event not to missed and we find many visitors return year after year telling us it puts them in the mood for Xmas.
The Yorkshire Dales are renowned for the lovely villages, waterfalls country inns and an abundance of outdoor activities. Grassington is on the dalesway, a famous 80 mile long trail which starts off in Ilkley and ends at the shores of Lake Windermere in the Lake District. Grassington is so convenient for exploring all of the Yorkshire Dales and you'll find we are only just over an hours drive away from the Southern Lake District.
During your visit why not visit Theakston Brewery & Visitor Centre at Masham or Malham Cove a curved crag of carboniferous limestone formed after the last ice age. No visit to the dales is complete without a visit to Aysgarth Falls where the River Ure tumbles over a series of broad limestone steps which are known as Aysgarth Falls. Although not particularly high the waterfalls are one of Wensleydale's most famous beauty spots (having been featured in the Kevin Costner film 'Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves'), with a pleasant riverside walk linking the Upper, Middle and Lower Falls.
There are many other waterfalls to be found within the dales and all well worthy of a visit. Then there's the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes where you can see the Wensleydale's world-famous cheese being made from the viewing gallery, as well as free tasting and a cheese shop. There is a museum tracing the development of the cheese from monastic times to the present. Visit the village of Askrigg just a short drive away, the setting for 'All Creatures Great and Small, which was made into a film, based on the book and later a TV series depicting the story of James Herriot a dales vet. The above are just a few of the wonderful places to visit during your stay.
