As a county, Northumberland has more strong houses and castles than any other in England. But worry not, the county’s warring is long past! With such a variety of things to see, it’s no wonder Northumberland is dubbed “the secret kingdom”.
This affectionate title becomes apparent when simply taking in the view from Birdsong Cottage where one can see the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle.
A short drive to the south leads into Alnwick, Northumberland’s traditional county town and the seat of The Duke of Northumberland. With it’s imposing castle and the magnificent Alnwick Gardens along with a myriad of traditional shops, Alnwick (only 10 minutes drive from Birdsong) is well worth a visit.
Across to the east and the dramatic vistas offered by the North Sea provide a unique and awe-inspiring site. The aforementioned Bamburgh Castle, once the seat of ecclesiastical power in Britain provides a good day out. Within a 15 miles radius of Bamburgh lie both Lindisfarne, accessible only by a causeway and also the world famous Farne Islands, home to a colony of more than 80,000 puffins during the summer months.
We can’t forget the Cheviot Hills that sit to the west of Birdsong cottage, part of the Northumberland National Park, the Cheviots provide a vast array of walks to suit all abilities.
Whatever your interests, with Newcastle a 40 minute drive and Edinburgh just over an hour away, you can be sure that Birdsong is an ideal base.
