The Cottage in the Wood
The Cottage in the wood is one of the finest hotels near Worcester and has the most stunning views of any hotels near Hereford. Other towns close by are Ledbury and Tewksbury making the hotel the ideal location for leisure breaks.
Uniquely set high on the Malvern Hills, Worcestershire, above the Severn Plain you'll find The Cottage in the Wood presiding over the 30 mile vista below, where the Cotswold Hills form the horizon.
At this landmark Great Malvern hotel you'll find the Pattin family now in their 25th year and into the second generation, assisted by a team of enthusiastic people. They love what they do - looking after you their guests.
If you seek peace, relaxation, fresh air, direct access to walks on the hills as well as good food and wine in a gloriously positioned restaurant, this is for you. Nor will your peace be shattered by large, noisy functions. Don't take it from us, check out the Trip Advisor reports and the awards that have been achieved.
The Cottage in the Wood nestles on a plateau half way up the Malvern Hills and commands magnificent views across the Severn Valley to the Cotswold Hills that form the horizon.
The hotel has been owned and run by two generations of the Pattin family over 25 years and is comprised of three buildings.
The Main House
The Main House was built as a Dower House to the Blackmore Park estate in the late 1700’s. It now houses the Bar Lounge, ‘Outlook’ Restaurant, seven bedrooms and a boardroom.
‘Outlook’ has been recently refurbished to give a lighter, fresher feel and the views are still the same from the large Georgian windows. Dominic (John and Sue’s son) is head chef and selects local produce for his modern English cuisine (see ‘Local Suppliers’ page.)
John organises the accompanying wine list with its 500 bins, rated as amongst the top 30 in the UK by the AA and a winner of Johansen’s ‘Wine List of the Year’ amongst other accolades.
The Bar lounge is a comfortable area with an open log fire in the winter and offers a wide selection of drinks and a large range of gins and malt whiskies.
Upstairs there are seven bedrooms which, whilst not the largest, are well stocked and comfortable, several face the front and one is a four poster.
Beech Cottage
Beech Cottage is an easy seventy pace stroll away and is marked on all the old maps and pre-dates the Main House by at least 100 years. Once a woodman’s cottage and also a scrumpy house, it now houses four cottagey bedrooms often booked for a family gathering or by a group of friends.
The Pinnacles
Named after Pinnacle Hill that rises above, The Pinnacles lies just beyond Beech Cottage and was built in 2003 on the site of the original coach house, once the home for the carriages for the Main House. The Pinnacles enjoys the finest views of all and has nineteen bedrooms, almost all large and front facing, two have balconies and six have patio seating areas.
Bedrooms
All our rooms are en-suite with bath, shower or bath with shower over, remote control colour tele/dvd/videos, free video library, direct dial telephone and wake up system, central heating of course, an additional fan heater for those ‘in between’ days, tower air circulator, choice of teas, coffee, hot chocolate and scrummy home made biscuits, hair dryer and bathroom kit and all rooms with a view have binoculars.
Pets
We warmly welcome pets in the hotel. Two well behaved animals can occupy the downstairs in The Pinnacles and invite their owners to join them. Please do discuss with us when booking. (See ‘Pet Policy’ page.)
No Smoking
The entire hotel is a smoke free zone but there’s a gazebo between Beech Cottage and The Pinnacles for your use where you can sit, smoke and enjoy fine views.
Grounds
The grounds are mostly wooded and steep but there are two direct access points onto the nine mile range of the Malvern Hills with hundreds of criss-crossed paths and tracks.
Functions – Not a ‘Conference’ Hotel
We have a boardroom facility but as we are not a large conference hotel, do not cater for weddings except those wanting a quiet lunch or dinner. We have no loud evening events or marquees to spoil your view or to wreck your peaceful relaxation.
