Rocamadour, the most popular site in the Lot, is 45km north, with its ramparts and houses clinging to a rock face above the Alzou gorge. Nearby, many grottos and caves can be found in the Causse du Quercy, displaying their prehistoric paintings and engravings.
Cahors, the capital of the Lot, is situated on the river Lot 15km away, with its good selection of shops, cafés, bars, restaurants, museums, galleries and historic architecture. The beautiful 14th century Pont Valentre, the only fortified bridge with three towers, in the world, is the symbol of Cahors. The Wednesday and Saturday morning markets are stocked with local produce.
Lot is a department in the new region of Occitanie, which incorporates the two regions previously known as the Midi-Pyrenees and Languedoc Roussillon.
Cahors is also known for its deep ruby red wines and the vineyard trail can be followed west of Cahors along the Lot valley to the beautiful medieval town of Puy-l'Eveque. Saint Cirq-Lapopie sits high above the Lot valley to the east of Cahors with a maze of lanes running between the attractive stone and half-timbered buildings.
The beautiful town of Sarlat is in close by Dordogne, with it's many wonderful chateaux along the river and many attractive bastide towns, and Domme is found just south of Sarlat, with a wonderful view overlooking the Dordogne Valley.
