Nearby is the thriving medieval town of St Yrieix La Perche with an old town centred round the magnificent church. Farmers markets are held at night during July and August with life music to dance under the stars. Close to hand are the main cities of Limoges, famous for its porcelain and old city centre with timbered houses, Brive and Perigueux with its winding old city lanes full of beautiful boutiques and restaurants, just the place to find a cosy tree lined square to have a coffee or something more.
There are Gallo-Roman remains and a museum featuring the vestiges of a home and giving insights into the living conditions of that time. Set on severn hills and a river the Saint-Front Cathedral has a commanding view. It is half Byzantine and half Roman. It was restored by Paul Abadie, an architect who designed the Sacre-Coeur in Paris.
Prehistoric sites of the Perigord area, including the famous Lascaux caves at Montignac are numerous and the beautiful towns of Sarlat, Bramtome and Bergerac are all within any easy days driving. There is so much to see and explore in the area of Perigord.
The caves at Le Gouffre de Proumeyssac are spectacular. This chasm resembles a vast underground cathedral full of crystal only discovered in 1907 and is sometimes used as a venue for plays and concerts. There are many activities for children of all ages, whether is canoeing down the Dordogne or other rivers in the area, exploring the many castles and gardens along the Dordogne eg. Castelnaud with its history of medieval warfare.
A childs dream to explore set on a stronghold atop a rocky mound overlooking the river and Beynac Castle which rivals it in popularity and one has to explore La Roque Saint Christophe. This is an outstanding UNESCO World Heritage site which is supposed to date back 55,000 years spanning the Paleolithic Age to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It is a unique example of cave dwelling built in a limestone cliff a kilometre-long. There is ample parking and a bar/restaurant at this very popular tourist site.
