Colorado Springs was founded by Englishmen who named it 'Little London'.
There was more gold found in these hills (in nearby Cripple Creek) than was found in California or Alaska. General Jackson Palmer was the founder of this city and it became prosperous when he brought his railroad here.
The Colorado College founded in 1874 has long history here. This mansion, now The St. Mary's Inn, was built in 1895 by Mary Giddings who owned the department store. She sold it to Edwin Stark, his wife Belle and their 4 children. Edwin Stark was known as the town historian. He donated 600 photos to our local museum. Edwin Stark came form the east with his cattle, and held many prominent positions in town.
