The West Usk Lighthouse
The West Usk Lighthouse is unique among lighthouses. It is round and not tall as most lighthouses and all the accommodation is within instead of cottages nearby. It was built in 1821 and is now grade 2 listed.
The lighthouse is situated near Newport and protected ships going into the harbour. It is at the junction of the Usk and the Severn Estuaries with panoramic views over the Bristol Channel and the Welsh Countryside. The lantern room was restored in 1998.
The West Usk Lighthouse is now a romantic B&B with waterbed and 4-poster beds in wedge-shaped en-suite rooms. There is a stone spiral staircase in the middle, which leads to the first floor where all the letting rooms are. The entrance hall is slate bedded. On the roof, there is a hot tub with stunning views and a garden which has a wonderful relaxing feel to it, with seating and parasols on bright sunny days.
The lighthouse is now also a small wedding venue for civil and naming ceremonies, for up to 22 guests. Rolls Royce and complementary therapies such as aromatherapy, reflexology are on offer. Beautiful and very personal. Each wedding has been very different. Humanistic blessings can be held on the roof and in the lantern room.
All amenities nearby. There is a full a la carte restaurant in the village, called the Elm Tree. Lots of good pubs around. Cardiff is 10 miles away with fabulous night life and restaurants. Many places to visit in the area, including Tredegar House which is now owned by the National Trust.
Small to medium dogs are accepted in the family room. There is a charge.
Great for reunions, family get-togethers and hen nights.
Friendly hosts. Distinctly different. Seen on the TV programme, 'The Hotel Inspector' and in many magazines, newspapers and on TV.
