Batalha
The Abbey of Santa Maria da Vitória (14th-16th century) is a Portuguese Gothic masterpiece and included in the UNESCO's International Heritage list. It is a reference point in the Portuguese architecture. The chapel of the 'Fundadores' (the founders) deserves special attention with its beautiful stained glass, its patio with galleries, the unfinished Manueline chapel and its major entrance hall. The limestone monastery commemorates the victory on Castile at Aljubarotta in 1385. Inside the abbey two unknown soldiers from World War I lie buried. Several kings left their mark. For example, Duarte had the royal pantheon built: the Capela Imperfeitas. The construction of the Capela Imperfeitas was stopped by Manuel I in favor of the monastery in Belém, the Jeronimos Monastery.
Coimbra
Coimbra is one of the oldest university cities that has retained its centuries-old traditions such as the students with the black cape, the Fados of Coimbra and the burning of the faculty ribbons on the end of the studies (Queima das Fitas). The university with its powerful tower and its magnificent baroque library overlooks the city. In the adjacent city quarters you will find the Romanesque cathedral and the Machado de Castro Museum, with its Roman cryptoportico. In the old streets with their medieval walls, arches and stairways, the Abbey of Santa Cruz (founded in 1131), the church of Santiago and the Abbey of Celas (13th century) are located. Across the river Mondego stands the Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Nova (Baroque, 17th century). 16 km south lies the town Conimbriga with the main Roman ruins of Portugal.
Fatima
Fatima is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the Mary-Catholic world. Comparable to Santiago de Compostela and Lourdes. The neo-baroque limestone Basilica has a 65 m high tower and a square twice as large as St. Peter's Square in Rome. On May 12 and 13 and on October 12 and 13, thousands of pilgrims come here to remember that Mary appeared to three shepherd children. On May 13, 1917 the shepherd children saw a shining female figure in the stone oak. She told them in the coming months to return on the same day. On October 13 the shepherd children came along with 70,000 pilgrims at the oak. Only Lucia, one of the shepherd children, learned the secret of Fatima that was discussed at the last apparition. The first part was a vision of hell, the second one was of a war worse than the First World War, the third was a vision of the murder of a pope. The latter was only revealed in the New Millennium by Pope John Paul II who was the victim of an assassination attempt in 1981. Within the Capela das Aparições' (Chapel of the Apparitions) the crown of Mary can be seen together with the bullet that was removed from Pope John Paul II.
