When we acquired Hillside in 2008 it was little more than a ruin. Careful renovation has respected the traditional structure but with a wholly contemporary style. The original walls are now incorporated within the house, contrasting with the softer tones of wall-paper and paint to create a peaceful harmony between past and present.

Situated in an attractive village on the hills above Valença the area offers spectacular views over the Minho Valley and is the ideal centre to explore the beautiful frontier lands of the 'Baixo Minho' with its fortified towns, charming villages and varied coastal scenery.

Two first floor rooms with independent access are available for guests, The Magnolia and Venetian Rooms, with either en-suite or private facilities (shower).

The guestrooms are centrally heated with television, Wifi and tea making facilities. They share a large covered porch, which offers views over the Valley and surrounding countryside. Sun-loungers and tables make it an ideal place to relax or have a snack on fine days.

The two rooms may be used as a Family Suite occupying the whole first floor and sharing one private bathroom. The super-king-size bed in the Venetian room may be substituted by two singles if preferred. The price of the suite for four persons is 120€ per night.

Our Hillside special continental breakfast with homemade cakes jams and locally produced honey is included in the room rate. Full English breakfast is available for a small supplement (5€). Weather permitting breakfast may be eaten outside on our summer terrace, which thanks to its sheltered position can be used throughout the year to enjoy sunny days. Dinners from our a-la-carte menu may be prepared by prior arrangement for those guests who prefer to dine at home instead of in one of the many excellent restaurants of Valença or Tui. Dinners are priced at 20€ (drinks not included)

We have two bicycles at the house for use around the village. Our library has a varied selection of books in English and Spanish together with plenty of local information.

Taiâo village offers several interesting things to see and do. A local rural museum, historic sun-clocks, watermills and the start of a 14km trail through the hills. There are also prehistoric paintings/engravings to be seen.
