Quinta da Abelenda, Lovely B & B in central Portugal
Quinta da Abelenda, Portugal
Very well located at just 200 meters from the river Dão, between Coimbra and Viseu, two lovely cottages, four campsites and a furnished caravan offer peace and quiet in a beautiful setting, with magnificent views over the valley.
Although the Quinta is quiet, it is by no means isolated. It has excellent connections with Lisbon, Oporto and Spain and it is well located for visiting some of the most interesting places of Central Portugal, such as the magnificent mountains of the Serra da Estrela and the Serra do Caramulo, the national park of Bussaco, the old university city of Coimbra and the city of Viseu. The vine-yards of the famous Dão wine are nearby.
The 4 hectare Quinta da Abelenda borders the beautiful Ecopista do Dão, a 49 km biking and hiking path that leads all the way to the city of Viseu, a former railway following the Dão river for miles. This river is very wide near Quinta da Abelenda, because it is part of the artificial Lake of Aguieira.
We offer guided horseback riding tours and we rent bicycles and canoes.
Cycling in Portugal over the 'Ecopista do Dão'
The former railway 'Linha do Dão', closed in 1988, connected Santa Comba Dão with the city of Viseu. In 2011 this railway was transformed into a spectacular bike and walking path, called the 'Ecopista do Dão'. With 49 km, it is not only the longest Ecopista of Portugal, but probably the most beautiful.
A large part of this path, which passes in front of Quinta da Abelenda, runs along the banks of the river Dão. Every bend in the river is followed by a bend in the Ecopista, with another view of the river. Because of the fact that it used to be a railway line, it is easy to cycle. There are no steep slopes in this mountainous area and you will be cycling in a very beautiful landscape.
The horse riding tours, outdoors
The area of Quinta da Abelenda is ideal for trail riding. In just an hour's ride at a walking pace you will already enjoy beautiful and varied landscapes, with views of the river, across farm fields and into the woods around the “quinta”. With the better riders we can ride a little faster or longer and show some more of the area.
For children we also have the possibility of a “first experience” with horseback riding. Depending on what the child wants, we gently introduce the horse, tell something about the basics of horse riding and make a short ride.
Walking in the Serra do Caramulo of central Portugal
For those who like nature walks in Portugal, the Caramulo is an ideal place. The south slope of the mountain ridge, is especially attractive. The highest point is the “Caramulinho”, at 1075 m. It is easy to reach from Quinta da Abelenda, it takes only 45 minutes by car to get there.
